One of the best & brightest. Truly a gifted and talented young man. Always smiling and joking. He held the world in the palm of his hand. Jay had the ability to do well anything he chose to do. His accidental death at age 20 was a tragic loss for all.

Jay was one of those people who truly knew who he was, even at an early age -- He held his opinion firmly and thought carefully about what he said. His intellect, striking blue eyes and white-blonde hair were just a few of the unique things we noticed about him! He seemed to be very disciplined and cared deeply about his efforts in High School. He was a person others would want to be like -- a leader who was noticed even at that early age .... we miss his leadership and want to make him proud of our own attempt to be our best in our lives, even as we age ...

May God be with you and your family, Jay.
You were absolutely one of the best the class of '72 had to offer this world.

Well, Charles and Laura said it all...Jay was special. I used to see his parents at Candler's Swim Club in Cary; as you would expect they were very intelligent and attractive. Jay sat behind me in Physics class. Does anyone remember Mr. Godwin...was it? Gosh, maybe I don't. In any event Mr. Godwin had returned to civilian life from his stay in the military and ALWAYS explained everything in terms of weaponry or ordinance. "If you fired a bazooka while standing on a beam of light..." When Archie Futrell became exhausted trying to explain what the hell he was talking about, Jay would tap me on the shoulder. Penetrating Steve McQueen eyes, sun-bleached hair and a knowing look almost like Klaatu in the original THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. Alas, like Klaatu he was unable to make this earthling understand...well, anything...specifically that the galaxy was expanding..."like schrapnel from an exploding hand grenade." Jay was brilliant and patient and kind and while I'm thinking of him, I feel as though he's right here.
